How to Fishing Snakehead with Indonesian Style

How do we know that there is a snakehead fish in a river or lake?

Just to illustrate, the habitat or characteristics where snakehead fish are usually found:

  • The state of the water is calm, not in a state of heavy water flow.
  • There are many aquatic plants, whether it be water weeds, lotuses or branches of trees and bushes.
  • There is a group of cork chicks. That indicates there is a parent snakehead around/below it.

The Right Time for Snakehead Fishing.

In the early morning or late afternoon. At 06-08.30 and 03-17.30, at that time the prey was fierce.

If the day is too hot, snakehead fish are less aggressive and more likely to hide in places full of grass or twigs.

So, look for a shady place because there is usually a hidden Snakehead. Casting in a grassy spot or lotus, not in the open.

If fishing at night, the right time is when there is no moon, because large Snakehead fish are always on the edge, while if the moon is bright the Snakehead is less aggressive.

Snakehead Fishing Techniques

Neger: leaving the fishing rod on the edge of the lake/swamp/river for some time.

Ngoncer: fishing with carp or frogs as bait.

Casting: use mini popper, froggy, stickbait, crankbait or minnow.

Rawe: fishing with many hooks.

Teger or Neger

Fishing for snakehead in swamps or rivers is more exciting. Above, it has been explained briefly, that Neger's technique is to leave the bait for quite a long time.

Therefore, we must abandon the cheap fishing rods. So as not to lose too much if it is stolen or taken away by the fish.

Make fishing rods from wood or bamboo in large quantities, then thread and hook at the end. Our fishing rod is ready, just go to the destination.

We can neger with small fish bait with a hook penetrated in the upper back. But the hook should not penetrate the middle bone so that it can last a long time.

How to fishing, plug the fishing rod on the edge of a swamp or lake on the edge that is rather deep.

Condition the fish hanging but still able to swim around the surface (approximately 2 cm below the water surface). Snakehead fish are very interested in these movements.

If the target is in the middle of the swamp. Use a lead at the end with a hook at the top, the lead string is about 15 cm so that the fish don't swim too far.

Keep the live bait near the surface of the water. Snakehead fish do not really like bait that is too deep in the water.

Rawe Technique

Make a special rawe fishing rod for fresh water. Attach as many fishing rods as possible to a main string that is larger than the lead string of the hook.

Make the distance between the leaders do not overlap. Put all kinds of bait, they are bamboo caterpillars, banana caterpillars, worms, young fish, frogs, etc., the important thing is that the bait can last a long time.

Now, the main string with many hooks that we have given bait, we stretch in the target area.

So that the main string doesn't move around, we put a ballast at the ends, and so that the snakehead fish also grabs the bait, we give the middle part a float.

If the water is not too deep, the snakehead fish will still want to pick up the bait, especially those that are still alive and moving.

After we stretch (if the swamp or lake is wide enough, adjust the arrangement of the hooks that are baited well) the end that already has a ballast we throw into the middle of the swamp with the calculation of the main string stretched later.

We tie the base to the wood, then we stick the wood under the surface of the water. That is, so that our rawe is not known to random people who can reap without sowing.

Leave it on for hours, best left overnight or all day. After enough time, pull it out and see if anything sticks out.

It should be noted, if the bait is live fish, when we string the bait it should be in the water, so that the fish that were previously plugged in can survive before we stretch the rawe.

Technique Ngoncer.

Ngoncer is almost the same as casting. The difference is, the casting moves the bait constantly. While ngoncer, bait that moves on the surface of the water.

More specifically, ngoncer is fishing with bait that can move on the surface of the water. Because it takes bait that is still alive. Bait used, small fish, frogs or crickets. If needed, a float is given to keep the fish floating.

Snakehead Fish Bait.

  • Frog
  • Worm.
  • Carp Child
  • White Scallop
  • Cricket
  • Banana caterpillar
  • Rice Crab
  • Green grasshopper
  • Cockroach

Cricket bait explanation.

Try crickets that have grown wings. The trick, put the fishing line at the end of the string, try to keep the pendulum from the fishing line as high as the surface of the water, then when plunged, try to keep the crickets floating, so they don't die quickly.

Now when the crickets move and flap their wings, usually the Snakehead will snatch.

Fishing Tools

Actually, fishing gear can use anything. As the opinion of the three anglers below.

1. Usually I use a tegeg fishing rod (tgeg: a rod whose strings are tied at the end) of 3.6m, the longer the better, then we estimate the ideal distance for fishing, Snakehead is very sensitive to sound/vibration.

If you hear the rattles, usually the Snakehead is stuck, we just need to pull it out.

2. If you want to fish for Snakehead and want to feel the sensation, you should use tegeg and green rice field frog bait, the size of your big toe.

For the tegeg rod, I used the pioneer fiber extreme 8 meters long, and for the strings it was 15 lbs. The length of the string is 1 meter shorter than the length of the tegeg.

For example, the length of the tegeg is 8 meters, the string is 7 meters, so that when we throw the bait it can be far away.

3. Choose a carbon hook because it tends to be sharper and easier to stick.

The rod is also influential, if it is too stiff, when the fish struggles it is more likely to escape.

If the rod is flexible, the struggle of the fish will be damped by the flexibility of the rod. Use a tegeg rod or a rod with a fiber end.

Fishing Practice.

Like fishing equipment, as well as fishing practice, there are many variations. We collect some of them as below.

1. Try to move the bait like a frog that is jumping on the surface of the water.

The direction of throwing the bait into the grass or lotus area, because usually the Snakehead likes to hide there.

I prefer Snakehead fishing with a float, set about 1 cubit (elbow to finger) then use a large and sufficient number of large worm baits.

Worms are made 2 punctures so that the worms can be tufted so that it will invite the taste of cork.

Then the bait is thrown from a distance, then pulled slowly, sometimes stopping and left. Do not fish far or throw it in the middle, because the Snakehead fish likes to be on the edge or where there is grass.

If there is a fish, it will definitely be eaten and this will be seen from the water bubbles near the buoy.

The characteristic feature of snakehead fish is that if they eat the bait, water bubbles will definitely appear.

Don't forget to use bigger (thick) strings because the snakehead family has sharp teeth.

As long as you see Snakehead grabbing small fish, it means that the fish still wants to eat. If there are a lot of small fish running around, then there must be a predatory fish.

If possible, when fishing for Snakehead, the bait is thrown (a float) some distance away, then slowly withdrawn, left for about a few seconds, then slowly pulled again, then silenced, and so on.

If there was a Snakehead in there, it would have been snatched. If the fish doesn't want to grab it, it must be because the pressure is too high (it could be due to the crowds of people, or the location is being fished too often).

2. Here the technique name is "ngacar". Using bamboo sizes up to 7 meters. A dirty black frog bait the size of half your thumb.

In order not to often get stuck between the sharp tip of the fishing line and the grass or weeds, using kale stems is guaranteed to be safe.

The Snakehead is played in shallow water, even if the water is deep in the middle, the fish usually comes from the side.

Several times I was casting in the lake (which is deep) and was grabbed by the Snakehead when the retrieve was close to land (shallow).

So, if I purposely fish with this target, I cast it towards the shallow edges.

However, my friend often gets bottom fishing in the lake, even though he throws it in the middle.

The frequency between the two (still in my experience), shallow water is more common. And if Casting, the results are greater than basic fishing.

3. If I usually go fishing, just throw it on the sides, right and left from where we are fishing, if not across from us (if the river is small).

I'm definitely looking for a spot with wood, grass or other water plants. Snakehead, most like to live in that place.

Try using the Top Water lure from Rapala, the time is before 10.00 am. Throw it towards the edge of the pond with lots of wood and bushes.

4. Use a hook for carp size or bigger is also ok. The stopper is adjusted according to the depth of the water, just add a little more.

The problem is that the Snakehead is mostly gloss at the bottom, so our buoy is half lying down, as soon as the fish sees the bait, it is immediately grabbed.

Well, as soon as our buoys start to stand up straight and keep walking away or closer, chances are our bait is already in the mouth of the Snakehead.

Don't pull it first, wait until our thread is pulled straight, then we snap it up. After that, we just need to pull and stretch, don't roll it up right away, the cork can jump and break our thread.

5. Use a float that is rather large. The distance from the float to the hook is approximately 30-40 cm. Hang the hook on the tail end of the carp.

Try to use a hook that is light but strong so that the carp can move swiftly.

When it's ready, just look for a group of Snakehead fish children who are playing. Usually, under the children of the fish there is a mother or father who is giving birth.

Just throw the bait past the group of Snakehead children and slowly pull it closer to the group. Wait a while, if it hasn't been eaten, throw it again, to the other side of the group, wait again.

But rest assured, if the group of Snakehead children is still very small, it's likely that there is still their mother or father under them.

6. Actually using worms is also quite effective, I usually use the Glosor (bottom fishing).

The order from the bottom, tin as big as a fingertip - mustache 2 - mustache 1 - connector - mainline. No need to use a float, just tighten the strings.

So, if the strings are pulled or become loose, don't hesitate to snap. The fishing position, if you can go against the direction of the waves, so the bait at the bottom keeps moving because the strings are rocked by the waves (this will attract the attention of the predator).

7. In my experience, the Snakehead is more effective with the ngoncer technique 2 to 4 times in one spot, usually even though the fish are not hungry, the fish become angry because their territory is disturbed. And the fishing rod was snatched.

The type of bait usually uses medium-sized frogs or lizards that are often on the walls of the house (quite powerful).
